[ in a world where the whole davepeta thing just didn't happen, there's maybe an outlier strider.

maybe there's multiples. dirk and dave collect duplicates like they're going out of style, and davesprite figures that all of them have the same issues. you're distinct because you're a bird and you're orange, but what the fuck does that mean to anyone else? or to you? the two indicators of davesprite (he was born dave, he was dave, but then he stopped mattering when he turned back the clock and rose disappeared) aren't really the indicators of the differences.

the physical ones? sure. but it doesn't cover john died and jade probably died and i let rose die because we had to save this timeline that i'm alive for when i was supposed to be dead but maybe it doesn't matter because i don't matter.

davesprite deals with it like he deals with most things: he makes jokes and he ignores it, but that doesn't stop the fact that he still exists and the universe doesn't seem inclined to stop him doing that just yet. so there's a happy ending world and everything neatly sorted and dave has a life and a brother and davesprite has...

you know, a life. that's cool. rose remembers a little of his timeline maybe, because she merged, and it's kind of somewhere near being something even if that something isn't enough.

he's curious about dirk. he saw bro die in real time and he never quite got to the same point dave did about the guy so he's...curious if cautious, and they seem to get along, dave and dirk. so maybe it's not his place to encroach and maybe like john dirk only wants the real dave but the guy talks about splinters and so davesprite figures...

well, he figures he should keep out of the way.

but he does eventually say something when he sees dirk with a cut on his arm. ]

...You gonna do something about that? Don't think you got the same deal as me. [ he means the always-open wound with the sword. a quirk of sprite biology and a stupid mistake with a crow years ago. ]

[ the new world they got to make and settle in beats all of dirk's wildest dreams. he actually gets to live among people and hang out with his brother whenever he wants. it's the sort of thing that you secretly hope for, but don't dare to entertain the thought of because it seems so impossible. and yet here they are, all of them settling into something approximating a normal life, the kind he's only seen in movies.

well, almost all of them. it hasn't escaped his notice that some are having a tougher time than others and one in particular has stood out to him. anything having to do with his brother automatically has dirk's extra attention and so davesprite is no exception. he's not sure if it's because he's a sprite and the game is technically over, leaving sprites without clear purpose, or if it's because he's a double of someone who is also actively around and existing. he would ask, but ... well, they haven't really spoken much at all. it's not that he doesn't want to get to know davesprite, because he does. very much so. but he gets the impression that davesprite sort of avoids him and that's fair.

knowing what he knows about dave's bro and also having heard that davesprite was there when said bro died are reason enough for dirk to let davesprite keep that distance and not force his presence where it might not be wanted.

so when he suddenly finds himself addressed on his way back from a good sparring session with his robots by davesprite, he's a little caught off guard. ]

What? [ it takes him a small moment to get what he means. first that there's a cut on his arm that he hadn't even noticed until now and secondly davesprite's own wound being what he's referring to. ] Oh. I'm sure it'll be fine.

[ look, he'll wipe the fresh trickle of blood away and tadaa, he's good?? who even knows how he managed to survive in a waterworld apocalypse on his own, it's a miracle. ]

...You should really get that patched up, dude. Do you have first aid stuff at your place?

[ it's either an offer or a suggestion, but davesprite doesn't make it clear which. he could say let me fix that but instead he leaves it sort of openended. so that dirk isn't cornered into one option or the other but can just kind of go with whatever he prefers.

it's the same mostly circuitous manner dave has, lots of times.

Uh, probably. [ a statement that would fill anyone with confidence, helped by the: ] Somewhere.

[ obviously he doesn't care a whole lot for the suggestion when he didn't really take much of an issue with his bleeding arm in the first place. he's going to helpfully shrug and continue on with a second verse that's same as the first. ]

Not sure where, but dude it'll be fine. I've had worse.

[ yeah, that's so convincing. gotta love that strider stubborness and refusal to care about one's own wellbeing. ]
